Get ready for things to get strange in the Venom-verse. Deadline reports that Chiwetel Ejiofor has been cast in the upcoming third Venom film. Ejiorfor’s role is unknown, but it is possible he will be playing the villain. Juno Temple is also set to star in the film. Additionally, Tom Hardy will be returning in the titular role, with Kelly Marcel in the director’s chair. Marcel worked as a writer on the previous two Venom films.
Ejiofor is no stranger to the world of Marvel as he previously portrayed Baron Mordo twice in Doctor Strange along with its sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Background on Venom
The character of Venom was created by Todd McFarlane and David Michelinie in The Amazing Spider-Man Issue #300. The character was very popular and quickly received his own solo comic. He would later make his cinematic debut in 2007’s Spider-Man 3, directed by Sam Raimi. However, that adaption proved unpopular. Eventually, the character would receive his own solo film.
The first Venom movie premiered in 2018, which starred Tom Hardy and was directed by Ruben Fleischer. The film mostly had negative critical reception, but was a box office hit and kick-started the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC). The film received a sequel in 2021 titled, Venom: Let There Be Carnage. It also was a critical failure albeit a box office success. The Marvel character also briefly appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Venom 3 is expected to be the last film in the franchise.
