Netflix doesn’t seem to have any plans on slowing down expansion in their The Witcher television universe anytime soon. The latest spinoff centers on the Rats, a controversial motley crew of thieves in Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels. Joining the ever-growing Witcher-verse is none other than 1980s action star Dolph Lundgren.
Having spoken to the Swedish outlet, Aftonbladet, Dolph Lundgren touched upon his battle with cancer and his struggles while fighting the disease while updating his current medical conditions. Lundgren addressed his plans and current projects. Here, he confirms that he is currently on set in South Africa filming a Netflix series connected to The Witcher. The only known series filming in South Africa with ties to The Witcher is the Rats spinoff or better known by its working title “Riff Raff.”
Say Hello To The Rats
Currently, it is unknown who Lundgren will be playing in the spinoff series. Not much is known about the upcoming project and where it takes place on The Witcher timeline. The spinoff has not been officially confirmed, although it is rumored to be in production through unconfirmed reports.
Lundgren joins a cast including actors Ben Radcliffe as Giselher, Christelle Elwin as Mistle, Fabian McCallum as Kayleigh, Aggy K. Adams as Iskra, Juliette Alexandra as Reef, and Connor Crawford as Asse. It is rumored that one of the following characters will appear in The Witcher Season 3. This season is set to follow the events of the second Witcher novel, Time of Content.
‘The Witcher’ Awaits Controversy
The addition of the Rats will surely bring controversy as fans of the novels are familiar with the group and their mistreatment of Ciri. Two members attempt to assault Ciri, while Mistle forms a relationship with Ciri, and fans question if it is consensual or not. Time will tell if Netflix and showrunner Lauren Hissrich shall be changing the group’s origin.
This will be The Witcher‘s third spinoff project, the first being the animated film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf (2021). The film was well-received and built on lore found in Season 2 of the hit series. The second spinoff was The Witcher: Blood Origin (2022), which followed the origins of the Witchers in a limited series. The latter wasn’t received by fans as positively as the previous spinoff.
