We are nearly a month away from The Witcher Season Three’s premiere, and the showrunner finally addresses Henery Cavill’s departure from the series. Last summer, Cavill announced his departure from the hit Netflix series. The announcement surprised many fans due to Cavill’s commitment to the role.

Lauren Hissrich, the showrunner for The Witcher, sat down with Total Film Magazine in an interview for the upcoming third season. Hissrich discusses the series’ fate without star Henery Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. She addresses the tough choice between continuing or canceling the series.

“It was time for him in his life to move on,” Hissrich said, who admitted Cavill’s departure was uncompromising news. “I think we’ve all been mourning this in our way.”

Netflix Carries On

Shortly after Netflix’s renewal for a fourth season, Cavill announced that he would be departing his role as series lead Geralt of Rivia. The monster-slaying Geralt will now be portrayed by Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games) in Season 4 and any further seasons. Hissrich adds:

I mean, we had the choice to have Geralt exit and to end the show [although] that’s not something we were willing to do. There [are] just too many stories left to tell. If we replaced Geralt with another Witcher, we would be going fully away from the books, and I don’t think that’s what anyone wanted either.

Cavill was a fan favorite and an avid fan of The Witcher franchise. Starting as short stories and novels from author Andrzej Sapkowski, the franchise hit international fame with the CD Projekt RED video game trilogy. Hissrich is still confident in her Netflix series success without fan favorite Cavill but shines a light on the future with Hemsworth.

“We’re all excited about Liam [Hemsworth] coming in,” Hissrich said. “He’s got enormous shoes to fill, but also has a lot of energy and a lot of excitement for it. It’s obviously a brand-new chapter for us. And there’s a lot of feelings involved. But at the end of the day, we love what we’re doing. So we’re gonna keep going.”
