True believers of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy are used to rumors circling the Internet. Still, now the webs are being cast elsewhere. The latest speculation comes via Thomas Haden Church’s chat with Comicbook.com. Church, who portrayed Flint Marko, otherwise known as Sandman, in Spider-Man 3 (2007) and would later reprise as Spider-Man’s iconic villain in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), addresses the possibility of there being a fourth installment in the Raimi Spider-Man saga.

While being interviewed for Peacock’s upcoming series Heavy Metal, Church addressed the possibility of a Spider-Man 4. “There’s always been some kind of… I’ve heard rumors…that Sam Raimi was going to do another [Spider-Man film] with Tobey [Maguire], and if that happens, I would probably campaign to maybe at least do a cameo,” said Church.

Sadly, the response only confirmed rumors, which would cause more online gossip. Since Spider-Man 3’s release in 2007, many fans have waited for a new installment of Toby Maguire’s Spider-Man. The original concept for the fourth film was scrapped at the beginning of 2010. Sony would later reboot the hero into Andrew Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man (2012). Both actors came back in the multiverse mashup that was No Way Home. Following their on-screen returns, fans have speculated the possibility of more outings with the prior live-action Spider-Men.

During the press release for 2022’s Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness with Fandango, Raimi said, “I’ve come to realize after making Doctor Strange that anything is possible, really anything in the Marvel universe, any team-ups. I love Tobey. I love Kirsten Dunst. I think all things are possible.”

He also elaborates, “I don’t really have a story or a plan. I don’t know if Marvel would be interested in that right now. I don’t know what their thoughts are about that. I haven’t really pursued that. But it sounds beautiful. Even if it wasn’t a Spider-Man movie, I’d love to work with Tobey again, in a different role.”

As for now, fans still do not know if there are any plans for Spider-Man 4 starring Tobey Maguire. However, thanks to Movies Go Fourth by Mark Edlitz, we do know that many concepts that had existed made it to the big screen in either Garfield’s or Holland’s outing as the wall-crawler, such as Lizard and Vulture being the villains.
