Sony Pictures’ upcoming superhero film, Madame Web, has drawn speculation over which character Euphoria star, Sydney Sweeney, would portray. Sony has aimed to expand their Spider-Verse by telling stories surrounding characters from Spider-Man comics history. Fans have known that Dakota Johnson is set to star as the titular character Madame Web for some time. Now, thanks to Sweeney’s latest interview with Variety, we now know she will portray Julia Carpenter/ Spider-Woman.
NOTE: It is vital to note that this discussion was held prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike and was recently released.
Upon booking the role, Sweeney states: “I was freaking out, of course. I went straight to the comic store and bought every comic that mentioned my character.” It is undoubtedly great seeing her enthusiasm for the character. While with Variety, Sweeney mentioned how she passed an athletic assessment test to prepare for Madame Web.
Who is Julia Carpenter?
Julia Carpenter, also known as Spider-Woman in Marvel Comics, is a multifaceted character with a complex history. Introduced in the 1980s, she initially took on the mantle of Arachne before later adopting the Spider-Woman identity. Julia possesses unique arachnid-based powers, including the ability to create and manipulate psionic webbing, superhuman strength, and the power of precognition. The character has been affiliated with various superhero teams throughout her comic book appearances, including the Avengers and the West Coast Avengers. With a background in journalism and a strong sense of justice, she has fought alongside some of Marvel’s most iconic heroes while navigating her struggles and triumphs.
Sydney Sweeney’s versatile acting skills and striking presence make her a compelling choice to portray Julia Carpenter. With her previous roles showcasing a range of emotions and complexities, Sweeney has proven her ability to bring depth and authenticity to her characters. The character’s multidimensional nature, combining strength, intelligence, and personal conflicts, aligns well with Sweeney’s acting prowess. She has recently portrayed Reality Leigh Winner in Tina Satter’s biopic drama, Reality.
Additionally, Sweeney’s on-screen charisma and physicality could convincingly capture the arachnid-inspired powers of Spider-Woman. At the same time, her potential chemistry with other Marvel characters would contribute to the interconnected universe’s dynamic storytelling. With her talent, Sweeney has the potential to embody the essence of Julia Carpenter and deliver a compelling portrayal of the iconic Marvel character.
Sweeney is set to star alongside Dakota Johnson, Emma Roberts, Isabela Merced, and Adam Scott in Madam Web. The film is still set to release in 2024, although a release date isn’t 100% guaranteed given the ongoing nature of the writers, actors, and now visual effects strikes. As of now, Madame Web is still projected for a Valentine’s Day release next year.
