London’s West End recording of The Prince of Egypt has been given a rating of PG, or Parental Guidance. This news comes from the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), attributing “mild violence, threat, [and] upsetting scenes” to its rating. Films with a Parental Guidance rating are for a general rating. Although, there may be some scenes that are unsuitable for young children.
The recording of The Prince of Egypt stage musical adaptation went into production last year and is directed by Brett Sullivan. It will reportedly run for approximately 144 minutes, or two hours and 24 minutes. Luke Brady, Liam Tamne, Christine Allado, and Alexia Khadime are cast in the film. The stage recording will be heading to premium video-on-demand and streaming platforms. However, no release date has been announced.
Background on The Prince of Egypt
The Prince of Egypt is based on DreamWorks Animation’s hit 1998 animated feature of the same name, written by Philip LaZebnik and directed by Brenda Chapman, Steve Hickner, and Simon Wells. It follows the Biblical story of Moses (voiced by Val Kilmer) from the first 14 chapters of the Book of Exodus as he liberates the Hebrew slaves from the Pharaoh’s rule. The film is critically acclaimed and won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Ralph Fiennes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sandra Bullock, Jeff Goldblum, Patrick Stewart, Helen Mirren, Danny Glover, Steve Martin, and Martin Short also star.
The stage adaptation made its debut at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley in October 2017 and also opened in Denmark and Utah the following year. A significantly revised new version of the musical opened in the West End in 2020, then reopened in mid-to-late 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
