Something about me? I have been a nerdy cinephile for as long as I can remember. Putting the two together is living my best life. That notwithstanding, I was born to express, not to impress, so I blog because I don't have friends. In other news, I like hashtags because they look like waffles, prefer my puns intended, and I always give 100% unless I'm donating blood. Thanks for reading.
Stop if you have heard this before: Marvel Studios plans on developing a film franchise around its OG superheroes–The Avengers.
Wait, what? You’ve seen all that before? Some Avengers are already dead? Been there, done that? Well, tough. It sounds like Kevin Feige’s fiefdom is so desperate for another box-office hit that they are willing to resurrect a franchise that isn’t dead yet.
When Marvel Studios was focusing on “The Infinity Saga” with Thanos and the A-list comic book heroes, The Avengers, life was grand. That was the masterstroke that spanned 23 movies over 11 years and earned close to $30 billion!
It was one of the grandest achievements in cinematic history, probably next to creating the “talkie” movie. Then, came Chloe Zhao’s Eternals. This was arguably Marvel Studios’ flying without a net, one held tightly by Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and led by Col. Nick Fury. Well, that and a few other TV series and flicks fell through the net and landed with a thud. (Yes, Thor: Love and Thunder, we’re staring right at you.)
With that, Feige has an idea to bring the band back together. Yet, it may be a skosh tone-deaf.
Are The Avengers Going to Cause CBM Fatigue?
How does the thought of rehashing The Avengers make you feel?
Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) is dead. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) retired to a fat farm in Vermont. Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) is dead. Captain America (Chris Evans) has an AARP card and plays Pickleball. Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) is a vigilante who probably is incarcerated somewhere in Minnesota. Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Gamora (Zoe Saldana) died, but there’s that whole Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 thing. The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) is a substitute teacher. Why can’t Kevin Feige leave The Avengers alone?
Talk about a Blip in the multiverse. This would be an interstellar FUBAR. Critics already think fans are getting comic book movie (CBM) fatigue with the lackluster ratings of DC Extended Universe (DCEU) remaining films and the sundry Disney+ series. Connecting is not an exact science.
Series and films post-The Avengers could have sucked, bored, or just didn’t fit the expectations of an MCU production. Whatever the case, this is a bad idea!
Feige’s faith in that content is a large component of what made Marvel so successful. And now, this threat looks weak, fickle, and desperate. It’s like a comic book movie company looks at ratings, gets scared, and forces some geek mish-mash together to make a film “they know will do well.” So, so inane and amateur.
Yet, this is a post about Marvel.
