The box office smash hit of the summer is finally available on home video and we were lucky enough to get our hands on a copy, courtesy of Warner Bros. UK.

Thanks to Barbie, all of the world’s problems have been solved. There’s no illness, no war and no cellulite – at least, that’s what the dolls in Barbieland believe, but when “Stereotypical Barbie” (Margot Robbie) enters her first existential crisis, it’s up to her and Beach Ken (Ryan Gosling) to find the human who is playing with her in the real world.

Barbie is a must-watch, especially for those sceptical about the idea of a live-action Barbie adventure. But in Greta Gerwig, we trust because she had crafted an unusual, hilarious and thought-provoking film for all ages (although adults will likely enjoy it more).

Barbie is available in all formats including DVD and 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray. However, the difference between each physical edition is only marginally different. The DVD we were sent sports a nice slipcover with Warner Bros.’s 100 Anniversary logo in the top corner, but the Blu-Ray case is a perfectly on-point “Barbie-pink.”

SPECIAL FEATURES

No matter which physical edition you purchase, it will come with the same six featurettes. Each featurette gives you nice glimpses of how the movie was brought together:

It’s a Weird World:

  • An in-depth ride into how the weird world of Barbie was created.

All-Star Barbie Party:

  • A highlight of the dream cast that helped make Barbie a reality.

Musical Make-Believe:

  • The music of Barbie is front and centre as we talk through how its magical scenes are brought to life.

Becoming Barbie:

  • Showing how Margot Robbie, Greta Gerwig and the team brought Barbie to life.

Welcome to Barbie Land:

  • A detailed look at all of the fabulous work that created Barbie Land.

Playing Dress-Up: An Extended Look at the Costumes of Barbie:

  • A timeless look at all the fashion that makes Barbie.

Each featurette is fun and showcases some great highlights of all the fun it took to bring Barbie and her world to life, the only downside is that these are the only special features on any of the discs and with each one only featurette lasting between six and twelve minutes in length. Another downside to them is how they are closer to being promos for the movie as opposed to traditional featurettes.

There is also no commentary of any kind featured on the Blu-Ray and with a film fronted by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach and such a stacked cast that includes Academy Award winners and nominees, and even the new Doctor Who (Ncuti Gatwa), it seems like a massive mistake not to include at least one.

PRICE RANGE & FORMATS

Barbie is now available in all major formats, each varying in price. Check out our list below with the UK prices. For the physical versions:

  • DVD (£9.99)
  • Blu-Ray (£14.99/£24.00*)
  • 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray (£24.99/£29.99*)

*Denotes steelbook editions.

Those willing to shell out a little bit extra for the 4K edition will be treated to a free standard Blu-Ray disc included. Depending on your region, a digital code may be available in both the standard Blu-Ray and Ultra HD editions.

You can also rent or purchase the film digitally from all major online stores including Amazon, Apple and Sky Store.

Barbie is well worth the price for the movie alone, especially on Blu-Ray where the vibrant colours pop out of the screen, even on standard Blu-Ray. However, the physical editions, while very pretty looking, are lacking in special features – something that would have been perfect for a movie as weird and wonderful as Barbie.
