Three years have passed since the announcement of The People Under the Stairs remake was made, with Jordan Peele set to produce. This week, the project has resurfaced in the news cycle. Bloody Disgusting posted an article with just a slight update. Peele, alongside his production Monkypaw, will produce the film for Universal Pictures. Ezra Claytan Daniels (Doom Patrol, Night Sky) has signed on to pen the screenplay.
Not much else is known outside of the film still being in early production. Still, any news is good regarding a project with Jordan Peele attached, even if he’s currently only set to produce.
Background on the Original Film
The People Under the Stairs (1991) is a horror film directed by Wes Craven. The story revolves around a young boy named Fool (Brandon Adams), entangled in a bizarre nightmarish situation. Fool and two others break into their landlord’s home to steal a rumored fortune. However, they soon discover that the house is a twisted maze filled with secrets, traps, and a group of mutilated and oppressed children living in the basement. As Fool and his companions navigate the horrors within the house, they uncover a dark and disturbing conspiracy that involves abuse, greed, and the lengths some will go to maintain control. The film blends elements of social commentary with intense horror and suspense, characteristic of Wes Craven’s unique storytelling style.
A television remake by Craven was in early development prior to his death in 2015.
With Peele holding a proven track record in successful horror films, fans of Craven can rejoice in knowing that this remake of a classic is in good hands. Hopefully, more news will come regarding the director and cast, but we can only sit and speculate as Peele has yet to make any further announcements.
