What’s worse than firing your lead actress? Losing the co-star of your upcoming film whom you were counting on to make money at the box office. Deadline now says Jenna Ortega has left the upcoming seventh Scream film. The news comes a day after Melissa Barrera was let go from the production for showing support for innocent Palestinians in Gaza on her Instagram stories.

While the timing has raised eyebrows, Deadline claims Ortega had exited the project several months ago. The trades suggest the actress’s schedule was too tight to fit in Scream 7. She has obligations with Netflix’s Wednesday Season 2 and Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice 2. Spyglass Media Group says the news is unrelated to their fallout with Barrera.

The Hollywood Reporter stated in yesterday’s report that the development of Scream 7 had been slow due to the strikes. Consequently, with no finished script — that will now have to be rewritten amidst Barrera’s firing — and no filming date for production set thus far, the scheduling conflict reports seem to be contradicting themselves. Just last month, The Wrap reported that Ortega was still committed to reprising her role of Tara Carpenter in Scream 7. If true, then this would make the scheduling conflict accounts questionable at the very least.

We will continue to report on this story as it develops.
