Christopher Landon, the filmmaker known for his work in writing and directing the Blumhouse slasher films, Happy Death Day and Freaky, announced on Twitter/X his departure from the production of the untitled seventh Scream film. This comes a month after Spyglass Media fired lead actor, Melissa Barrera. Barrera campaigned for a ceasefire in Gaza as a result of the Israel and Hamas conflict in which Palestinians are being murdered in a genocide. Shortly after, co-star Jenna Ortega exited the film, though the trades claim it was unrelated to the studio’s clash with Barrera.
Statements from Christopher Landon Regarding Scream 7
I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago. This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on. I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes’ legacy thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world. What he and Kevin created is something amazing and I was honored to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow.

This comes after comments he made toward fans of the late Wes Craven’s famed slasher horror franchise on the social media platform. Landon has voiced his frustrations with reactions directed at him regarding the controversies involving both Spyglass and Barrera. In one tweet, he cited that death threats were made towards him as well as his children.
I absolutely have a right to my privacy and my personal approach to this impossible situation. I owe the public nothing. I’m a human being and as much as Melissa [Barrera] has a right to her beliefs I have a right to my own and a right to choose when and where to share them. Period.
Christopher Landon, X
The last time we heard any developments in regards to the newest installment, Spyglass Media was planning a full creative reboot. Christopher Landon was still on board back then, or at least it seemed that way. Now, Scream and Scream VI writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick appear to be the only people working on the project.
We’ll continue to cover this story as it further develops.
