Sydney Sweeney hasn’t just won over audience members’ hearts; the young star is seemingly becoming one of Sony Pictures’ go-to celebrities. Deadline broke the news that Sweeney’s Barbarella remake is negotiating with Jane Goldman (Stardust, Kick-Ass) and her daughter, Honey Ross, to pin the screenplay, with Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) in talks as the film’s director. Barbarella will be in pre-production for some time seeing that both Sweeny and Wright are currently deep in the midst of working on other projects, separately.
While Sydney Sweeney and Edgar Wright are both currently busy, it makes for more time for the writer’s room to prepare for an excellent starting point for a potential franchise. Goldman and Ross will work closely on the script, and fans can expect a great action film. Goldman is a frequent collaborator on filmmaker Matthew Vaughn’s works and has screenwriting credits for X-Men: First Class starring James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, its sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past, as well as the Kingsman franchise.
Sydney Sweeney & Edgar Wright’s Pre-Barbarella Projects
Currently, Edgar Wright is busy working on another franchise reboot The Running Man with Sydney Sweeney’s Anyone But You co-star Glen Powell. Wright has shown interest in the film taking several meetings with Sony Picture executives, which leads to a promising possibility that he is will helm this picture. Sony Pictures and Wright worked to make Baby Driver (2017) together, and the two could reunite, seeing that Baby Driver has the fun artistic style that Barbarella star Sydney Sweeney wants from the film.
Sweeney has had a rather busy 2024 since the year began. Sydney Sweeney starred in three films that have already been released this year: Anyone But You, Madame Web, and Immaculate.
Seeing that Anyone But You did wonders at the box office, it makes sense that Sony would try to lock down a deal with Sweeney to star in more films for the studio. The romcom Anyone But You earned $210 million at the worldwide box office on a $30 million budget, marking a rather highly successful theatrical run. Sweeney starred alongside Halsey in Tony Tost’s Americana, which debuted at South by Southwest in March of last year. Lionsgate currently owns the rights to distribute the film worldwide.
With plenty of time, Sony Pictures and Sydney Sweeney’s dreams for the Barbarella remake are making their way in all the right directions. Hopefully, Sweeney will do justice to the original 1968 classic while also bringing her own fresh spin to the classic. Until then, stay tuned to The Cinema Spot for all breaking entertainment news!
