Following the explosive and drama-filled Season 1 finale, My Adventures with Superman Season 2 returns with a two-episode premiere, and unsurprisingly, it’s a great follow-up. First of all, the animation quality is still incredible, making for the best-looking animated superhero show out there right now (sorry, Invincible and X-men ’97). The anime stylization really helps set it apart, allowing for the show to be unbelievably cute but also giving room for some really epic fights.
My Adventures with Superman Season 2 does not waste any time jumping right into the story and providing some answers left from the premiere season. At the same time, it still keeps in sight what works best about the show, which is the relationships between its characters.
Relationships
Whether exploring the relationship between Lois Lane (voiced by Alice Lee) and Clark Kent (voiced by Jack Quaid), Jimmy Olsen (voiced by Ishmel Sahid) and Perry White (voiced by Darrell Brown), or even Clark and General Sam Lane (voiced by Joel de la Fuente), My Adventures with Superman always provides interesting and fun dynamics to watch. Specifically, Lois and Clark are the beating heart of the show. Now that the two characters are officially dating, they are even more of a delight to watch. Clark becomes even more of a big giant teddy bear while still being fiercely protective of Lois. Lois and Clark do occasionally butt heads, but ultimately, their love and care for each other does win out.
Clark and General Lane’s dynamic is only explored briefly in the new season thus far. Still, this dynamic promises to be one of the more interesting ones over the course of the season. The tension between the two characters is high and likely to explode when and/or if General Lane finds out Clark is actually the superhero known as Superman.
While Jimmy is a little more separate from the dynamic couple, he is still as energetic as ever and one of the best parts of the show. Following the sale of his Flamebird channel/social media presence last season, Jimmy is a little more cocky. Consequently, this leads to some very amusing moments between him and Perry White. There is a great new reoccurring bit involving Jimmy’s net worth that will be fun to see throughout the whole season.
All of these work in no small part because of the talented voice cast. Quaid brings a warmth and occasional aloofness to Clark. Lee really helps bring the ferocity out in Lois while still being kind. Lastly, Sahid is just so much fun in the role of Jimmy.
New Threads
My Adventures with Superman Season 2 also sets up a couple of new major plots very quickly. By the end of the two episodes, there are two great plot threads involving Clark searching for his Kryptonian cousin, Kara, and the stage is set for Alex, or as he now prefers it, Lex Luthor (voiced by Max Mittelman) taking a more central role. On top of all that, Season 2 provides a few other minor villains that fans of Superman will be happy to see. All of these promise to bring lots of drama and entertainment throughout the rest of the season.
That said, the speed at which some of these new arcs are introduced, especially in Episode 1, is a little fast. At times, the plot feels like it gets in the way of the characters’ moments that really make the show shine. Still, it is exciting to see these developments occur. Hopefully, the rest of the season gives these moments a little more breathing room. To sum it up, the My Adventures with Superman Season 2 premiere gives fans more of what they loved about Season 1 while setting up some exciting things for the future.
