Sometimes I write things, but mostly I watch movies.

My Adventures with Superman Season 2 continues to be a delight to fans with its third episode, “Fullmetal Scientist”. Written by Cynthia Furey and directed by Jen Bennett, the episode has all the hallmarks of Jake Wyatt, Brendan Clougher, and Josie Campbell’s series with great anime influence, a focus on the journalism aspect of the characters, and new versions of classic characters.

Journalistic Rivals

The most enjoyable thing about this episode was the focus on journalism aspects, which were missing in the series’ previous episodes. Following Lois Lane (voiced by Alice Lee) and Vicki Vale (voiced by Andromeda Dunker) as they compete to get a scoop is immensely enjoyable. On the one hand, Vale is a rather interesting foil against Lois, considering she is more ruthless and does not care as much about how her story affects people. Still, she and Lois have a deep respect for each other, which makes their rivalry more layered.

The episode also grants a little more focus to Jimmy Olsen (voiced by Ishmel Sahid) in his new role as the head of the department. This leads to a necessary depth for the character. Jimmy learning to step up as a manager and not just being a sidekick is a good step. Hopefully, he continues to be a more active protagonist in this role.

It would have been nice to see more than just Clark Kent (voiced by Jack Quaid) reporting. Yet, the little article narration by him at the end of the episode is a nice way to close it out. This keeps his journalism in sight while still giving the overall narrative plenty of Superman heroics.

Missing in Action

A slightly more disappointing aspect of the episode was seeing this universe’s version of Metallo. They seem like repurposed versions of the Kryptonian robots from the last season, which makes sense and is completely understandable in this universe. The fights with Metallo lead to a pretty exciting action sequence at the end of the episode. These sequences are dynamic and go through several different stages. Clark races against an imminent explosion, providing some nice tension for the final act. Still, in terms of Metallo, it feels just a bit disappointing, especially given some of the more unique takes on villains in the show, such as Parasite.

A couple of new plot points are set up in this episode, including a new job opportunity for Lois, as well as Clark manifesting a new power… which is a little unclear. Future episodes will no doubt expand on it and the search for more answers about his Kryptonian heritage continues. Overall, “Fullmetal Scientist” is a bit of a step down from the premiere, although still an enjoyable watch nonetheless.

Score 3.5/4
