Sometimes I write things, but mostly I watch movies.

My Adventures with Superman Season 2 Episode 4 is titled “Two Lanes Diverged”. Written by Sari Cooper and directed by Diana Huh, it is one the best episodes of the series by far. Clark Kent (voiced by Jack Quaid) takes a backseat during the episode. In doing so, he lets his friends Jimmy Olsen (voiced by Ishmel Sahid) and Lois Lane (voiced by Alice Lee) shine. “Two Lanes Diverged” follows the previous weekend’s episode, where the latter two characters get their development, while Clark discovers a new superability as Superman.

This episode spotlights Jimmy as he’s invited to speak at a conference as an expert on Superman. Jimmy and Clark spend a lot of time together here. There’s a scene where it becomes abundantly clear why Jimmy is Clark’s best friend. Clark has physically saved Jimmy many times, but Jimmy has saved Clark in more emotional ways quite often. Seeing Jimmy take the front seat, with Clark more in the background, is a nice change of pace.

Jimmy’s eventual confrontation with Lex Luthor (voiced by Max Mittelman) proves why Lex is such a formidable threat. Jimmy is Clark and Superman’s biggest advocate. However, Lex is an incredibly gifted and persuasive public speaker. Because of this, the antagonist can easily sway the crowd with his rhetoric.

Sins of the Father

The second half of the episode focues on Lois and her relationship with her father, General Lane (voiced by Joel de la Fuente). There is some really powerful stuff here, seeing that Lois’ anger and frustration at her father have been a constant in her life. Between constantly moving and feeling emotionally distant from her father, Lois’ anger actually feels real and earned. Lois Lane is brought to life by emotionally strong performances from Jolie Hoang-Rappaport—who voices the character in her adolescence—and Alice Lee. Hoang-Rappaport’s performance as a younger Lois is so in line with Lee’s current-day version of the character that I was shocked to find out Lois has been voiced by a different actress altogether after the episode ended and the credits rolled. A few moments in their interactions nearly brought me to tears.

Of course, Joel de la Fuente does a great job as the voice of General Sam Lane. At times, his gruff voice performance can come across as somewhat stereotypical. Yet, in the moments when he does get to be more emotional, he truly shines. The General and his daughter are a great duo to watch together. Between the excellent performances and some well-placed flashbacks, the show brilliantly makes you want to see their relationship mend.

Final Thoughts on My Adventures with Superman Season 2 Episode 4

The plots of Lois and her dad, along with Jimmy and Clark at the conference, converge. More so, they culminate in a pretty exciting fight sequence at the end of the episode. Lois displays some resourcefulness using different gadgets. Seeing her team up with the two most important men in her life against Task Force X is exciting and tense. The emotional beats tied with an exciting action sequence easily make “Two Lanes Diverged” one of My Adventures with Superman‘s top-tier episodes.

Score: 5/5

My Adventures with Superman Season 2 airs on Sundays at midnight via Adult Swim and the next day on Max!
