Sometimes I write things, but mostly I watch movies.
My Adventures with Superman Season 2 Episode 5, titled “Most Eligible Superman”, is written by Josie Campbell and directed by Kiki Manrique. The episode continues the series’ hot streak. In last weekend’s episode, we focus on Lois Lane (voiced by Alice Lee) and Clark Kent’s (voiced by Jack Quaid) relationship, as well as be introduced to a brand new character.
Hey, Jealousy
One of the biggest parts of the episode is seeing Lois deal with her relationship not just with Clark but with Superman, specifically. Coming off the events of the previous episode where her father left her once again, Lois is in an especially vulnerable state. Naturally, then, seeing Superman paired up with the most eligible bachelorettes in the city drives Lois to a dangerous place. Combined with the lack of communication between the couple, it was clear that one of them had to break. The drama between them is believable thanks to Lee and Quaid’s excellent performances. Lee makes Lois sound genuinely hurt and scared; Quaid’s Clark comes across as someone confused and desperate to keep the relationship intact.
Not to mention it is always nice to see superhero adaptions embrace the melodrama of it all when so many live-action movies and television series steer away from it. The melodrama is a key aspect of superhero stories, so having it utilized fully here makes My Adventures with Superman stand out. The breakup between the two really puts Clark at a low point, which is only furthered by the arrival of his cousin, Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl (voiced by Kiana Madeira).
My Adventures with Supergirl
This episode’s other subplot is all about Kara and Jimmy Olsen (voiced by Ishmel Sahid). The new character bumps into Jimmy trying to find Clark, but Jimmy attempts to avoid Clark after the events of last week’s episode. Due to some tropey albeit sufficiently hilarious miscommunications, neither character realize the other is talking about Clark/Superman. The tropiness can be forgiven, thanks to the electric chemistry between Kara and Jimmy.
Kara is just an absolute delight to watch. She is adorable and instantly a great addition to the series. Kiana Madeira does a great job of voicing Kara. She is cute and confident, alien but approachable. Her design calls back to Android 18 from Dragon Ball, which helps her stick out more than her versions. She plays off Ishmel Sahid’s Jimmy so well. Of course, Kara has more than meets the eye here, too. This only further breaks down Clark after his break up.
Final Thoughts on “Most Eligible Superman”
“Most Eligible Superman” gives fans more of what they want and delivers a great new take on a classic character. Kara’s journey over the coming weeks is one that I cannot wait to see and will have huge ramifications for the series.
Score 4.5/5
