HBO and Warner Bros. Television seem prepared to take the Green Lanterns’ Oath as it moves forward with a series titled, Lanterns. The premium cable outlet has spent the past five years attempting to get the series to take off, and now the series finds a home in HBO with an eight-episode run. Lanterns is set to follow the journey of two iconic Green Lanterns.

Chris Mundy (Ozark, True Detective: Night Country), Damon Lindelof (Lost, The Leftovers, Watchmen), and Eisner Award-winning writer Tom King—who has written multiple DC Comics titles such as Batman, Mister Miracle, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow—will be the creative forces and executive producers behind the series, with Mundy as the showrunner.

The official logline for Lanterns is as follows.

The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Initially, a series by The CW’s Arrow showrunner Greg Berlanti was meant to be created in 2019. The prior series had its cast and writing staff ready—with Arrow co-showrunner Marc Guggenheim joining the project in late 2020. However, the new DC Studios, led by James Gun and Peter Safran, has brought several changes and a fresh start. There are currently no actors signed on to the project.

Official Statements

Casey Bloys, a chairman and CEO for HBO and Max Content, has this to say about the Lanterns series.

We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on DC’s ‘Green Lantern.’ As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live action series will mark an exciting new era.

Additionally, Gunn and Safran have the following to say.

We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and LANTERNS brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with ‘Superman.’

Green Lantern in Live-Action Media

The last time a major live-action appearance of a Green Lantern was in Zack Snyder’s Justice League three years ago. In an epic battle with Darkseid (Ray Porter), Green Lanterns Yalan Gur and Kilowog appear.

Before this, Ryan Reynolds dawned the CGI suit in 2011’s Green Lantern. The film was panned for its writing and creative choices to the point that Ryan Reynolds even made fun of it during the end credits of Deadpool 2. Hopefully, the series’ creators will take notes from this film on what to avoid.
