It is with great displeasure that I report that, Adam West has passed at the age of 88. Best known for his role as the iconic character Batman in the 1960’s, he passed after a short battle with leukemia, according to his family.  “There are no words to describe how much we’ll miss him,” his family said Saturday in a Facebook post to fans. “We know you’ll miss him too and we want you to know how much your love and support meant to him throughout the years.”

He played a couple of roles before landing himself a role in Batman, as Batman. In the 1960’s he made appearances in Bonanza and Bewitched. Although, his role in Batman was what shot him to fame. West was the first actor to bring Batman to life on the big screen, with the TV series Batman. He fought along side Robin played by Burt Ward, for the dynamic duo we know today, to outwit Joker and his crew. Later on in his career he voiced characters in many Batman spin-offs, characters from The Fairly Odd Parents, and Mayor Adam West in Family Guy. He also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in April 2012.

In an interview with Variety he said it was heartwarming to see how beloved his Batman character still was 5 decades later. “I just think I’m the luckiest guy in the world, really. I am,” he told Variety. “I mean, how many people get a chance to create an iconic character and one that goes on?”

Although I myself never watched his version of Batman, it’s still sad to see many people’s childhood hero pass on, but I think no matter what, Adam West’s Batman will forever be iconic.
