The next installment of Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse and the sequel to Godzilla (2014) began filming today. Godzilla: King of the Monsters is being shot under the name of “Fathom” in Atlanta, Georgia. The synopsis of the film has also been released.
The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
The film will star Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Kyle Chandler (Super 8, Friday Night Lights), Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring, The Departed), O’Shea Jackson (Straight Outta Compton), Aisha Hinds (If I Stay), Anthony Ramos (Hamilton), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones, Alien 3), Randy Havens (Stranger Things), Ken Watanabe, (Godzilla), Sally Hawkins (Godzilla), Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), Bradley Whitford (Get Out, West Wing) and Zhang Ziyi (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). Micheal Dougherty (Krampus) will helm the film and co-wrote the script with Zach Shields (Krampus).
The film is shaping up to be a dream come true for kaiju fans everywhere with a loaded cast and perhaps the four most famous of all Tohos’ monsters. Godzilla: King of the Monsters is set to hit theaters March 22, 2019.
