With all the Marvel Netflix shows having been set-up in such a way that they build towards a ‘phase finale’, in the form of the hero team up in the upcoming, and highly anticipated, Defenders mini-series, one begs the question; what’s next for the Netflix heroes? Here’s what Mike Colter had to say about the future of Luke Cage in an interview with IGN:
I think that anything is possible down the road…We need to develop the characters. I think there’s a big-picture plan that includes everyone doing their own series, which we’ve done, culminating to make The Defenders. I think after that anything goes.
We have the Heroes For Hire thing that could possibly happen. And we have the Jessica and Luke in the Alias comics hooking up, having a child, and changing their life style. That could happen. You have a multitude of things that could happen.
While I don’t think that an exact adaption of Alias is in order, assuming there isn’t a time jump (which I don’t think there will be), a version of the story-line may well be something Marvel pursues, with the duo already a proven prospect on-screen.
Heroes For Hire, featuring the team up of Luke Cage and Danny Rand, was a successful attempt at boosting sales for both the Luke Cage and Iron Fist comics, and given Iron Fist’s iffy reception among fans and critics alike, a Netflix team up between the two could serve the same means: revitalization.
To sum up, depending on how Defenders ends, and is received by fans, I think that a future team up series is very much a real possibility.
All episodes of Defenders hit Netflix on the 18th of August.
