I remember one of the first video games I played on my PlayStation 2 was Spider-Man, based off of the Raimi films, its follow-up, Spider-Man 2, being one of the greatest superhero video games of all time. Since then, there have been plenty of games based on Marvel Comics, all enjoyable in their own ways. The upcoming Spider-Man game to be released next year looks quite promising, yet it seems we haven’t gotten a truly gratifying game revolving around multiple Marvel characters since Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Crystal Dynamics, a company of Square Enix and the developers behind the current generation console’s Tomb Raider games, has recently given us a glimmer of taking Marvel video games to the next level.

I’ll be honest, I was completely unaware of the announcement in January from Marvel on Twitter about the game. Apparently, the partnership is ongoing even beyond this game. It is the first of multiple games across multiple years ahead. Now, Crystal Dynamics has two job postings for “The Avengers project.”
One of them is for a level developer to design “fun and unique online experiences” with an understanding of “the social implications of shared gaming” and “various game modes and campaigns.” The other is for a combat designer to “plan, prototype and build combat systems that directly apply to a 3rd person cover based action adventure game.”
IGN suggests that with these aspects of the game in mind, it’ll amount to something akin to Destiny, and despite never having played it, I know it’s pretty expansive for an MMO. If we were to get an open-world superhero game, online especially, with a substantial roster of Marvel characters, it would be a dream come true. With that in mind, it’s definitely going to take a good amount of time, so if it’s coming next year, I’m hoping it’s released as late as possible to be complete and quality.
