The trailer opens picking up sometime after we left off in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Rey stumbles onto what looks to be the rocks of Ahch-To, seemingly exhausted.
We then begin to hear the famous John Willams score we all know and love atop the Lucasfilm titles, along with (FINALLY) Luke Skywalker speaking for the first time since the original trilogy.
“Breathe” he says, telling Rey to catch her breath as the camera pans over the oceans of Ahch-To. A shot of Rey standing before the crashing waves, strong above them. Already, it seems what most have guessed is true: Luke is training Rey in the ways of the Force.
As soon as Luke says “Now, reach out”, there is a shot of Rey, hand on the ground, pebbles lifting into the air. We knew Rey was powerful without training and can only just imagine the feats she will reach from now on.
“What do you see?” Luke asks. What we see, or rather who, is Leia Organa, standing over the hologram showing the galaxy or galaxies, Rey saying she sees “light”. Then, we zoom in on what looks to be Kylo Ren’s helmet, but completely demolished, Rey saying she sees “darkness”. Next, a shot of someone putting their hand over the emblem of the Jedi Order, Rey saying she sees “balance”. All throughout these, we hear the faint voices of memorable lines…
Finally, we pan to Rey training with Luke’s lightsaber with Luke watching over her on the mountain, as he says “it’s so much bigger”.
The music escalates. Ships close (one getting too close) to the ground spraying something red. Conflict has begun…
Finn, still in his coma from the previous film, is being contained, hopefully safe from the impending attack. Poe Dameron and BB-8 race down the halls of their Rebellion base, then shielding themselves from explosions in the hangar, probably as an attack has reached them.
The Millennium Falcon is engaging with TIE Fighters. Rey might be piloting to fight and escape after the First Order has tracked her down.
Rey is running with her lightsaber, Kylo Ren is wielding his…
Luke, much like in Rey’s flashback, is alongside R2-D2 as he watches what is likely the Jedi temple/academy he once trained Jedi in burn.
Captain Phasma and stormtroopers march, the First Order and the Rebellion fight amongst the stars…
The trailer ends on Luke’s final words: “I only know one truth. It’s time for the Jedi…to end”.
I think it goes without saying this teaser trailer was infinitely stellar! After seeing The Force Awakens establish so much within the Star Wars lore, seeing a glimpse of what’s to follow for characters, old and new, is thrilling for all that have seen this. Rey will transcend the power she already has with the help of Luke, Kylo Ren could shed his role as a Knight of Ren, the First Order will once again be hot on the trail of the Rebellion with Poe and BB-8 being their and the resting Finn’s hope, and overall the minds of the characters and the audience will be expanded in regards to the force and the Jedi Order!
(Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi opens December 15, 2017, directed by Rian Johnson and starring Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver)
