Fans have been teased about the newest installment in the Die Hard franchise since 2015 by Len Wiseman, who directed 2007’s Live Free Or Die Hard.

The premise has barely been changed since its original conception, the plan being to go back and show a young John McClane’s early cop years in 1970’s NYC. Willis’ scenes would bookend the movie, giving each fan their well deserved fix and ensuring quite the paycheck for our veteran Willis.

Willis has stated, quite firmly, that this would be his last “yippee ki-yay,” and he would be leaving the franchise to possibly reboot or find another name to fill the boots of John McClane (which I’m assuming, are filled with broken glass):

”In the next few years they could easily find a replacement for me or call the character someone else. But for me, I want to do Die Hard 5, then one final Die Hard movie — Die Hard 6 — before finally hanging that white vest up for good.

“At the moment, I can run and I can fight on screen. But there will come a time when I no longer want to do that. That’s when I’ll step away from the Die Hard films.”

As for the story of the new movie, some are skeptical in what really could be told about the iconic character, going backwards in his history. Len Wiseman, in an interview with Collider, had this to say:

After doing the fourth one, there were so many conversations that Bruce [Willis] and I were having about what he put into the character for Die Hard 1. ‘That character comes in with so much baggage, emotionally, and experience.

‘He’s already divorced, he’s bitter, his Captain hates him and doesn’t want him back. So, what created that guy?
We’ve never seen the actual love story. We know its demise, but we’ve never seen what it was like when he met Holly, or when he was a beat cop in ‘78 in New York when there was no chance of him making detective. ‘It’s always been something I’ve been thinking about, and now we’re doing it. And it ties in.’

Casting is underway for the young McClane and no whisperings of a possible release date have been muttered. This will be an original story, not tethered to the original novel, Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp.

I, for one, am pretty excited to see the new direction this beloved franchise will take.

“Yippee Ki-Yay, Motherf*ckers!”
