The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Disney has finally found its star for the upcoming live action adaptation of the Chinese story after a year-long search.
Casting directors went to five continents and saw almost 1,000 candidates for the role. They required someone with credible martial arts skills and the ability to speak English. They focused on finding an ethnically Chinese young woman to play the title role.
Chinese actress Liu Yifei, also known as Crystal Liu, will be portraying the Chinese warrior Hua Mulan, who disguised herself as a man to take her father’s place in the army.
Liu has starred in television dramas, and films such as The Forbidden Kingdom, Outcast and The Chinese Widow.
Niki Caro, who recently directed The Zookeeper’s Wife, will direct the film.
The movie is eyeing a 2019 release.
