I remember walking into The Avengers when I was thirteen years old.
I begged my dad to check me out of school to take me to go see it. I remember thinking about how much bigger the world of the MCU could get, on February 15th, 2018, the world got insanely bigger. We were handed Wakanda and all it had to offer.
Black Panther is a well-known character in the Marvel universe. He has been involved in almost every major event and has had a key role in shaping the comics as a whole. How wonderful it was to hear an announcement back in 2015 of a new film slate, that of which included Black Panther. Before I share my thoughts on the film, I will remind you of what it is about.
After the death of his father, T’Challa returns home to the African nation of Wakanda to take his rightful place as king. When a powerful enemy suddenly reappears, T’Challa’s mantle as King — and as Black Panther — gets tested when he’s drawn into a conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people.
I don’t want to dive into spoiler territory so I will keep it fairly simple. I want to discuss three key things: The world of Wakanda, Micheal B. Jordan’s performance as Erik Killmonger, as well as the acting in general, and the story as a whole.
First of all, The world of Wakanda is by far the most beautiful, breathtaking, and extraordinary world Marvel has ever given us. It beats Asgard by a marathon. It is filled with crazy technology, beautiful buildings, and wonderful culture. It is broken down into five tribes, and every tribe has a personality, and culture of their own. It is so fun to look at, and feel immersed in.
Second, let’s talk about someone who doesn’t get enough credit, Micheal B. Jordan. His performance in this film is by far one of the best he’s ever done. He is a true artist and gives us the best Marvel villain since Loki. Killmonger is such a captivating villain with real emotions and motivations.Everything he does in this film is backed up by other something he says, or did prior. He owns every scene he is in, and lets you know how talented he is. But beyond that, every actor, and actress in this film kills it. There wasn’t a single moment where I felt a person pretending to be another person. I felt like I was watching a real, beautiful African culture live their everyday lives.
Lastly, the story. This film had an amazing story. Every scene felt important, and nothing felt out of place. Everything happening was believable, and normal almost. It handled the political statements incredibly well and told a story worth telling. The characters dialogue felt real, and there wasn’t a single moment where I was bored with what they were giving me. Every single moment was backed up with a reason, and nothing felt like it was leaving the theme of the film. It handled the theme very well, and never forgot what it was trying to do.
This film gave us everything. Beautiful action sequences, wonderful characters, a whole new, amazing world, and a wonderful representation of an under-represented culture. This film is amazing, and I found maybe one or two flaws, but they weren’t important enough to discuss because they’re things that tend to annoy me, but without a doubt didn’t ruin the film as a whole.
For me, Black Panther is a 9/10.
