After months of a bidding war, the shareholders at Fox have finally voted on accepting a buyout by The Walt Disney Company. Disney’s $71.3 billion bid beat out Comcast’s bid, who backed out of the bidding war last week. Instead, Comcast, parent company of NBCUniversal, is set on pursuing Sky, a European media conglomerate.
This vote does not officially tie the knot between Disney and Fox, as a series of international regulations must be met in order for the deal to be completed. if any of these regulations are exceeded, it could spell the end of the deal.
Some of the most notable properties that will transfer from Fox to Disney in this deal include the X-Men characters as well as the Fantastic Four, Marvel’s First Family. The original Star Wars trilogy, in which Han shot first, will also become the property of Disney. Finally, the live-action Batman series from 1966, starring Adam West and Burt Ward will also fall under Disney’s control. This is an irregularity, as Batman was created by DC Comics, whose movie rights are owned by Warner Bros.
Overall, the deal is great for fans. We finally have the chance to see a reboot of the Fantastic Four done properly, the X-Men can fight the Avengers, and we may even get the unadulterated cuts of Star Wars‘ Original Trilogy!
