2018’s gore-filled horror flick Upgrade was a well-received, and surprising hit. It’s director, Leigh Whannell has continued to bask in the film’s success, and has taken up directing Universal’s reboot of the 1933 film The Invisible Man. While the film was originally planned to be released as part of Universal’s monster-verse, Universal has decided to move ahead with the films, but leave them unconnected– for now.

Following Tom Cruise’s failed 2017 The Mummy reboot, it seemed that all hope for the classic monster-centric universe was abandoned. The news that Whannell will be directing The Invisible Man shows that those classic monsters will return to the big screen, without all the added pressure of living within a shared universe similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe or The Conjuring franchise. It was also announced that Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions will produce the film, with both saying this is a fresh start on what was originally planned for the Johnny Depp-led project the first time around.

Are you excited to see the monsters on screen, even if they will not be in the same universe? Let us know in the comments below, and be sure to follow Geek Motivation on Twitter and Instagram for all the latest geek news!
