Disney is on a roll, at least in the box office when it comes to live action films recently. Aladdin‘s live action remake is doing well in the box office with almost $900 million in gross earnings! Meanwhile, The Lion King live action remake is tracking for nearly $150 million alone in pre-sales; so it looks like Disney in a good stride when it comes to the live action slate of Disney remakes.
The next big remake on the horizon for a lot of 90s kids is the live-action remake of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. While not all the details are ironed out for the movie, the foundation is set with Rob Marshall directing the project with most of the iconic soundtrack coming to the film along with new music being made by the legend himself, Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The only part of the movie that is not filled yet is the main cast, but it looks like things are starting to be ramped up. Melissa McCarthy is currently in talks with Disney to play the evil Ursula. I am a firm believer, “Your movie is only as good as your villain is,” and I think Melissa McCarthy could do a fantastic job in the roll. Remember, these are only talks, as the movie doesn’t even have an official release date. McCarthy is a well-established actor with roles in Bridesmaids and Spy. This also would not be her first time working for Disney, as early on in her career she did some small parts in Disney hit show Kim Possible back 2002 and 2004!
It will be interesting to see how the cast turns out! For all things, Cinema, you are in the right place!
