From stage to screen, Beetlejuice Star Alex Brightman is set to play John Belushi In a new biopic. This has been in the works since about 2013. It was originally set up with Warner Bros. and was then tapped as an indie film. This is the first time anything has progressed since then.
David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada) has signed on to direct the film. Belushi was star of Saturday Night Live, and had significant roles in both National Lampoon’s Animal House and The Blues Brothers.
The film plans to follow John Belushi from the height of his fame, Collider does not mention whether or not they will ultimately include his death at 33. Actors such as Adam Devine and Joaquin Phoenix were considered for the role, however the larger than life two time Tony nominee won the role.
Brightman’s other Broadway credits include School of Rock (Tony nominee), Wicked, Big Fish and Matilda the Musical. He has recently been cast in the new comedy Here Today also starring Tiffany Haddish and Billy Crystal.
