The Cinema Spot has learned that a new The Shadowhunter Chronicles adaptation is in the works.
Constantin Film is developing a new The Shadowhunter Chronicles adaptation. This adaptation will be based on the The Infernal Devices trilogy, and will be available on BBC Three. This series is not a Shadowhunters spin-off, as the two shows aren’t connected. This Infernal Devices series will be set in a separate world, one that is more accurate to the books.
The pilot for the series has already been written, with the pilot having been shopped around to networks and streaming services for a few years until it landed at BBC. It’s possible that this series will be a co-production between BBC and another distributor like Netflix. BBC isn’t new to the world of co-producting, as some of their most popular shows have been co-productions. Dracula was made through a partnership between Netflix and BBC, with His Dark Materials being co-produced by BBC and HBO.
Judith Lewis, better known by her pen name Cassandra Clare, is an American author of young adult fiction. She has written multiple franchises set in the same universe. Most notably, The Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments.
The Infernal Devices is a trilogy centering on a race called the Shadowhunters. The trilogy is a prequel series to The Mortal Instruments series, and contains some of the character’s ancestors. The series follows Tessa Gray, an orphaned teenage girl who discovers she has the power to shape-shift, but doesn’t bear a mark that shows she is a warlock. She is forced to learn how to control this newly established power and navigate the new world she was forcefully introduced into. The series follows Tessa’s life as she lives in the London Institute with the Shadowhunters.
The Mortal Instruments is a series of six young adult fantasy novels, the last of which was published on May 27, 2014. The Mortal Instruments is chronologically the third series of a proposed five in The Shadowhunter Chronicles, but it was the first one published. It follows Clary Fray (who interacts with a group of Nephilim known as Shadowhunters) while also discovering her own heritage. The Shadowhunters protect the world of mundane people, who are also called mundanes or “mundies”, from dark forces beyond their world.
There have been multiple attempts at a successful The Mortal Instruments adaptation, with Shadowhunters being the most popular. Shadowhunters, also known as Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments, is a supernatural television series developed by Ed Decter. Shadowhunters was produced by the Constantin Film production company. The series synopsis is listed below:
The series follows Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara), who finds out on her eighteenth birthday that she is not who she thinks she is, but rather comes from a long line of Shadowhunters, human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons.

Variety originally reported back in 2018 that Constantin Film was in discussions with various broadcasters and platforms about a The Infernal Devices adaptation, which would include Shadowhunters crossover characters. It’s safe to say that this project has since been canceled, as we have not heard anything about this project in two years. Moreover, Shadowhunters has been canceled too, which makes it unlikely that this project will ever come to fruition. Cassandra Clare herself confirmed on Tumblr that a pilot script for an Infernal Devices adaptation was in the works, though it’s unclear if this is the same project that Variety reported on or the BBC Three series.
BBC Three is a British streaming service operated by the BBC. The service produces and streams television and web series aimed at the demographic of 16 to 34-year-olds, with a particular focus on comedy and documentary programming. BBC Three is most notably known for the Killing Eve television series.
Constantin Film is a German film production and film distribution company based in Munich. The company is a large independent German maker and distributor of productions in the entire field of audio-visual fiction and non-fiction. Constantin Film is best known for the Resident Evil film franchise.
