Warner Brothers has decided to reshuffle the majority of their major films’ release schedule for the end of 2021 amid the Dune release shift.
Dune, which held the firm release date of December 18, 2020, shifted to October 1, 2021, initially releasing beside Matt Reeves’ The Batman. As was expected, Warner Brothers decided it best to delay the release of The Batman until March 4, 2022. This five month delay also forced Warner Brothers to shuffle around a few other release dates.
DC Films
With The Batman moving, the DC film lineup was forced to change. Originally slated for June 3, 2022, The Flash will now release on November 4, 2022, the previous release of Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The sequel to 2019’s hit Shazam! now sits on a June 2, 2023 release date. Between the release of The Batman and The Flash, the production conglomerate has added two unannounced projects to its slate, set with June 3, 2022, and August 5, 2022 slots.
Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam has also found itself delayed. Initially scheduled for a December 22, 2021 release, the demi-god has found his solo flick removed entirely from the Warner Brothers roster.
Others
The fourth Matrix film, directed by Lana Wachowski and starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Yahya Abdul-Maheen II, has found its release date pushed forward. Previously slotted for April 1, 2022, the film will now hit the big screen on December 22, 2021. This spot was previously held by Black Adam.
Beside Black Adam, the studio’s adaptation of the hit video game Minecraft was removed from the schedule, vacating the March 3, 2022 slot that was filled by The Batman.
This is but the first of many major adjustments expected to come from the major studios. As Cineworld closed down their theaters indefinitely in the U.K. and Regal in the U.S., the tides of fate hold release dates in the balance, as well as theaters altogether. While these dates seem like “safe” dates, 2020 has shown that nothing is certain as No Time To Die, starring Daniel Craig, has circled the calendar and wound up with a brand new release date of April2, 2021, nearly a full year after it’s initial slot.
