Wonder Woman 1984 was released in British cinemas on December 16th, nine days ahead of its scheduled US release on HBO Max. The biggest problem with this, though is that only roughly 25% of UK cinemas are open.

In early December, the United Kingdom came out of its second lockdown and entered into the new Tiered system. In this system, counties with rising or high COVID-19 cases have been placed in the highest tier – Tier 3. In this tier, all theatres and cinemas are not allowed to operate. Despite even the city of London entering this tier on December 16th, Warner Bros. was adamant that Wonder Woman 1984 would see a cinema-only release.

After much confusion and upset to British fans who cannot see the movie in their areas, Wonder Woman 1984 will be arriving on PVOD (Premium Video on Demand) in the UK on January 13th, 2021. It will continue to screen in the cinemas that are allowed to open. Customers won’t be able to buy and keep the movie as of yet, but they will be able to rent the film for 48-hours and watch it as many times as they want during that time period.

Variety did report that the film may see a PVOD release sometime in late January, with a deal being crafted with the Comcast-owned broadcaster SKY, which offers a PVOD service called SKY Box Office. While there have been no announcements as to which services will carry Wonder Woman 1984, the official statement from Warner Bros. says “participating digital retailers” meaning that it is safe to assume that SKY will not be the only place you can rent the movie.
