This week’s episode of The Book of Boba Fett takes us back to Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison)’s rise but gives us very little in terms of story progression. “Chapter 4: The Gathering Storm” is directed by Kevin Tancharoen and written by Jon Favreau. The episode also stars Ming-Na Wen and Carey Jones.

Minor spoilers ahead.

Moving Backwards

This week we get another (mostly) flashback episode. While parts of this story are necessary and give us more information, it still feels like the story is being interrupted. Morrison and Wen work well together on screen, and it’s nice to see how they came to be a team, but this all feels like information we should have had earlier in the series.

Slow burn doesn’t quite seem to cut it with this series, and the action sequences are getting less and less impressive. This — coupled with the slow pace of the main storyline — is making the show more and more difficult to watch. We’re past the halfway point, and it feels like we are still in the initial setup of The Book of Boba Fett. While it’s easy to see that a lot of setups is needed, this is also something that could have been done earlier in the series, and we should be much further along into the bulk of the story.

Getting a Team Together

Whilst in the main timeline of The Book of Boba Fett, we get very little progression, as we’re still in the political drama build-up stages of the show. While we do see that Wookiee can, in fact, rip a man’s arm off, there’s very little else in terms of drama in this episode.

We do see Morrison’s Boba Fett growing into his new role as Daimyo as he starts to prepare for the war with the Pyke syndicate. It feels like he is settling into the role more and more, building up his army, and preparing himself for the worst. While the action and pacing haven’t been the best, it has been an interesting study into an iconic character, and how he has progressed.

Looking Forward

The Book of Boba Fett‘s story so far has been a little underwhelming. It feels like two shows that have been pushed together; we don’t seem to get enough of each storyline to keep us interested in either one. The setup and character introductions are necessary, but it feels like we’re getting too much of the build-up and not enough of the payoff.

We have to hope that there is something bigger and more enticing in store for the second half of the series using all of the characters and plots to give us the resolution we need. The elements are all there now, we just need them to come together.
