It’s time for some “Big Fun” because Heathers the Musical is coming to a cinema near you!
Heathers the Musical is based upon the 1989 black comedy film of the same name, in which a high school clique known as the Heathers welcome Veronica (Winona Ryder) into their group. But their clique is interrupted by J.D. (Christian Slater) who wants to murder the popular students in their school and stage them as suicides.
Following successful workshops in 2009, the first full performance of the musical took place in Los Angeles before moving Off-Broadway in 2013. Since then it has been performed in multiple countries including Australia and Brazil, but it’s the UK productions that have gained the most attention.
Originally opening as a workshop at The Other Palace in London, the 2017 production was so successful that it transferred to the West End’s Theatre Royal Haymarket. The production included two new songs “You’re Welcome” (replacing “Blue”) and “Never Shut Up Again”, a new song for Heather Duke. A West End cast recording was released on March 1st and reached #1 in the iTunes UK Soundtracks charts.
It has since gone on to tour the UK and is currently celebrating its third London revival, having returned to the Theatre Royal Haymarket in 2021, and is once again performing at The Other Palace until September 4th 2022.
With the massive success of the show in Britain, it’s not all too surprising to hear that the musical will be recorded and released in cinemas. As of now, it is not confirmed whether Heathers the Musical will only screen in the UK, but we can hope that this will also be the case for other countries around the globe as well.
The production will be shot across two live performances with seats available through a ballot (details to be announced). To accommodate filming, tickets for 3rd to 19th May have been removed from sale. The live recording of Heathers will be created by Steam Motion and Sound, who is also behind the upcoming recordings of Waitress and The Prince of Egypt.
