Something about me? I have been a nerdy cinephile for as long as I can remember. Putting the two together is living my best life. That notwithstanding, I was born to express, not to impress, so I blog because I don't have friends. In other news, I like hashtags because they look like waffles, prefer my puns intended, and I always give 100% unless I'm donating blood. Thanks for reading.
In case you missed it, Chris Rock, has been a lightning rod for news lately. Following the pimp slap seen ’round the world, everywhere Rock goes, he’s getting overturned by the media.
(See what I did there? The saying “leave no stone unturned.” And Chris’ last name is Rock. Well, never mind. Back to the show.)
Rock, 57, was performing at the Arizona Financial Theater over the weekend in downtown Phoenix. That’s where he dropped a bomb about the Oscars. According to the report in the Arizona Republic, AMPAS (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) asked Chris Rock to host the 2023 Oscars. Fans in attendance did everything from applauding to booing.
It wouldn’t be a Chris Rock show if the guy didn’t crack a joke, right? Make a funny, have some giggle time, or even tickle your insides. You know? His job?! However, millions of people think the guy went just a touch overboard with how he communicated this to the live audience.
Should I Stay or Should I Go Now?
Who says you can’t go home again? AMPAS asked to host the Oscars in 2005 and 2016. Both times, he crushed it. And following Will Smith’s impression of Iceberg Slim handling one of his “clients,” Old Man Oscar thought it would be good mojo to ask the prolific comedian again.
The third time was definitely not the charm, as we discovered.
Rock compared returning to the Oscars like returning to the scene of a crime, referencing the murder trial of O.J. Simpson, whose ex-wife’s killing began with her leaving a pair of eyeglasses at an Italian restaurant.
Rock said returning to the award ceremony would be like asking Nicole Brown Simpson “to go back to the restaurant.”

With an expletive-laden tirade, Rock shared his refusal of a lucrative Super Bowl commercial too. It’s no secret that slap has done anything but hurt Rock’s stand-up career. The guy sells out everywhere. And, every once in a while, he’ll talk about that.
But this time, Twitter took exception:
So, what did we learn in all this mess? Three things:
1. Is it just me who noticed when he makes fun of a black woman with a hair-loss disease, it’s “just jokes.” But when he makes fun of a dead white woman, not so much? Never mind, people of all backgrounds have rolled out a Nicole Brown Simpson joke series in their acts for decades.
2. Are these the same people who said that Chris Rock was victimized on national TV? I would hate to point out how their hypocrisy is showing.
3. C’mon bruh. That was 1995! How many people in that audience even got the reference?!
