Over two months into the Writers Strike and during the opening days of the SAG-AFTRA Strike, fans were given a glimmer of hope regarding the future of HBO’s The Last of Us. The series launched earlier this year, and shortly after, season two was greenlit. When the first two strikes, speculations about the series meeting its deadline began to circle. Luckily, it seems that there is still hope for the series yet.
The Last of Us is an HBO television series based on the critically acclaimed video game of the same name. Set in a post-apocalyptic world devastated by a fungal pandemic, the story follows Joel (Pedro Pascal), a hardened survivor, and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a young girl who may hold the key to humanity’s survival. Together, they embark on a dangerous journey across the ruins of the United States, facing numerous threats and encountering both friend and foe. The series aims to capture the intense and emotional storytelling of the game, exploring themes of survival, morality, and the bonds that form in desperate circumstances.
Season 2 and Episode 201 Completed
In part two of Deadline’s two-part interview with series co-creator Craig Mazin, the future of The Last of Us played a vital role. The interview comes after the series snagged several Emmy nominations and continues speculating on the end of the series and who will be featured in season two. One of the Opening questions involved how far Mazin and the hit video game’s director Neil Druckmann made it on season two before the WGA Strike began.
“We know what the whole season is, and I was actually able to get a write and submit the first episode right before the deadline hit,” he said. “So now I’m just walking around kind of brain-writing, I guess, which I don’t think is scabbing. I take walks and I think through the scenes because when the bell rings and this is over because the companies have finally come to their senses, I’m going to have to basically shoot myself out of a cannon because we really want to try and get this show on the air when it’s supposed to be on the air.”

Then on filming for season two, Mazin said:
“If these strikes go much longer we inevitably will have to push and that hurts us, and it hurts the audience, and it hurts HBO. We all, everybody wants to get back to work; I think everybody that’s actually doing the work, including the network people who are with us on the ground, I think everybody just wants to get this solved. So fingers crossed.”

Season 3, Frank & Bill, & More Clickers!
One exciting piece of information involved the series beyond season two. “It’s going to be more than one season. There’s more story, so this show will not end with Season 2 unless people don’t watch it, and we’ll get canceled,” Mazin said. With how popular season one was and Pedro Pascal invading TikTok and Instagram as the ‘daddy of the internet,’ a season three is pretty much guaranteed.
Another aspect of the series that fans loved was the special episode three, which featured the characters of Bill (Bill Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett). “What you won’t see is, for instance, another very special episode with Bill and Frank, we aren’t going to milk it. When we do something that we think is beautiful, we let it be as it is and find other beautiful things to do.” This episode led to Nick Offerman and Craig Mazin’s Emmy nominations.
Then for those upset by the lack of Clickers in the series, “there will be moments, just like there were in the first season, where the infected are very present,” he said, which means that more action sequences with the Clickers will be present. A complaint that many viewers and fans of the games pointed out.
Those who still have not watched the series can find it streaming on Max. The series is mild on horror and is great for those wanting an excellent story featuring zombielike and human enemies.
