As of 12:01 am last night, the 118-day-long SAG-AFTRA strike is over. This past Wednesday, November 8th, the actors guild announced that they had struck a deal with the major studios, tentatively ending the strike. The vote was approved unanimously, and later this Friday, the agreement will be voted on by SAG-AFTRA’s national board.
Over the past week, the two sides have been fine-tuning the final offer. This historically marks the first-ever negotiation regarding AI revolving around actors. On top of that, the deal is set to raise the average pay by 7%, which is 2% higher than other guilds in Hollywood. The WGA had a 5% pay average when they ended their 146-day-long strike. Plus, the actors will receive a small “streaming participation” pay and better health insurance plans.
The Next Steps
Now that the strikes are settled, writers and actors slowly return to work. Since Thursday morning, fans have been treated to projects and works in progress. Ryan Reynolds has teased Dogpool being in Deadpool 3. This is a sign that the actors are celebrating what we, the fans and viewers, have wanted to see for months. The release date of the film is set for summer 2024, as the actor stated in his post.
We can expect studios to announce more projects and announce updated release dates for their projects. Until then, fans can wait and enjoy this victory with their favorite actors and writers reigniting the studio system. Time can only tell what will happen in three years when the contract is set for renewal to see if another strike occurs.
