Something about me? I have been a nerdy cinephile for as long as I can remember. Putting the two together is living my best life. That notwithstanding, I was born to express, not to impress, so I blog because I don't have friends. In other news, I like hashtags because they look like waffles, prefer my puns intended, and I always give 100% unless I'm donating blood. Thanks for reading.

A nation divided, leaders inept at collaborating, two retreads with potential for becoming U.S. President in 2024, and now a dystopian, compelling trailer for a movie titled Civil War. What could go wrong?

Alex Garland has a novel mind. When someone considers the top directors and storytellers of the day, he usually doesn’t come up in conversation among casual cinephiles. However, when someone rattles off his films — Ex Machina, Annihilation, 28 Days Later, and Hulu’s Devs — lightbulbs go off like a photo gallery during the Oscars.

His latest project shows a despotic version of a conflicted America with a plot being protected like the U.S. Mint. Civil War has a chilling trailer, full of grit and turmoil. It’s a good thing this is kicking off the festivities at the ballot box, huh?

Let’s Hope Civil War Isn’t a Biopic

Typically, April at the movies is the way out of a fog of B-list horror flicks and a few knock-off action movies that would go straight to streaming during most months. That notwithstanding, Civil War looks to blow all that away.

Just look at that cast: Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons (sweet red shades, by the way), Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Jefferson White, and, portraying the US President, Nick Offerman. This is not some single-digit, million-dollar box-office draw. Garland appears to have made a harsh look at America, should…you know, anything polarizing happen among its populace.

The film’s logline is not revealing at all: “A race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor’s edge.”

A24 has also leaked a little more information about the chaos in the trailer. Nineteen states have seceded from the Union creating a schism across the country between the compound-esque “Florida Alliance” and the resistance “Western Forces.”

Catch that tagline? “All Empires Fall.” This should be good. Civil War begins its fight on April 26, 2024.
