For the longest time, even after the release of Spider-Man 3, fans have been clamoring for one of Spidey’s biggest foes, Venom, to be portrayed and portrayed well on screen. With Sony’s countless projects and concepts since then, particularly The Amazing Spider-Man franchise and its numerous spin-offs, seeing Venom on screen again seemed hopeless. After all of those dissipated, and Spider-Man began being shared with Marvel Studios in their Marvel Cinematic Universe, things started looking up, and not just for Spidey. Since March of last year, it has been confirmed there will be a Venom solo film, and as of today, Tom Hardy will fill the role of Eddie Brock himself.

Sony tweeted this today to break the news:

This news is nothing short of amazing, as Tom Hardy is probably the best choice for the role. He already has experience as a villainous comic book character after playing Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. His portrayal of Bane was ruthless, but it must also be remembered that Eddie Brock is just as much human as he is monster, constantly referring to himself as “we” when bonded to the symbiote as Venom. That’s where his strengths of roles like Max Rockatansky in Mad Max: Fury Road will come into play. Yeah, he’s a badass, but crippled by mistakes he’s made, just like Brock.

The team behind Venom consists of writers Scott Rosenburg and Jeff Pinker as well as Zombieland’s Ruben Fleisher who is set to direct. Zombieland, while being mostly comedic, has some serious ferocity when it comes to the zombies, making it one of the best R-rated zombie apocalypse films to date. Jeff Pinker has helped written The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and despite its criticisms, I have high hopes for his upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. Lastly Avid Arad and Matt Tolmach, along with Amy Pascal, are producing. They haven’t had much luck with Spider-Man in the past, but maybe a change in gears to a different type of film and a different type of character will do them good.

Venom is set to be released October of 2018
