Blade Runner Review

We’re so close to the release of the long awaited Blade Runner 2049, but before we indulge in the belated sequel, let’s go back and take a look at Ridley Scott’s original sci-fi thriller.

Set in Los Angeles in 2019, Blade Runner tells the story of a futuristic world where genetically engineered beings, known as replicants, are hiding amongst the human population. Since these human-like beings are seen as a threat, the police send special detectives known as Blade Runners to track them down. The story follows a particular Blade Runner named Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) who is sent to investigate a recent crime committed by a replicant. As Deckard looks into this incident, he uncovers a sinister plot beyond his comprehension.

There’s a countless amount of qualities that make this movie great. The acting is done so well from all members of the cast. Every actor from Harrison Ford to Rutger Hauer gives such a unique performance that no two characters feel alike. Each performance is so uniquely intriguing that no character really steals the show.

The plot and deeper meaning of Blade Runner is immensely complex.  This film was made to be watched multiple times. Ridley Scott fills this movie with characters and environments that all represent different elements of society and the human spirit. To this day, fans still speculate and theorize about the overall themes of Blade Runner.

The score and cinematography go together like peanut butter and jelly. The detailed set design, techno style music, and astounding visual effects create a completely immersive world that makes Scott’s vision of the future actually believable. Scott also mixes lighting with his score to build tension and make some scenes even more intense.

This movie gives the perfect blend of acting, visuals, plot, message, and editing. Blade Runner is easily one of the best sci-fi’s of all time.
