Shortly after Warner Brothers’ Aquaman dove into theaters, the studio announced another DC property film was in the works, titled, The Trench. The film is aimed at further exploring the treacherous creatures of the deep introduced to audiences in the aquatic film. Now, Aquaman director James Wan has offered an update on the spinoff.

Talking to ComicBook, Wan said,

“We’re still deep in sort of crafting the script, crafting the story right now so I don’t want to get into that too much, but definitely it’s one that I really want to lean into the horror of it, so it’s going to play more as a monster horror movie then it will as a superhero film, but it’s still definitely part of the Aquaman world.

Wan certainly is the person to oversee the project as Noah Gardner and Aiden Fitzgerald pen the script. After having created iconic horror franchises like Saw and The Conjuring, Wan continued his work with DC and Warner Brothers post-Aquaman as a producer on DC Universe’s Swamp Thing. Unlike many other superhero shows, Swamp Thing takes on more of a horror feel, and since it’s first episode released, has been a critical success with equal fan appreciation.

There has yet to be a release date revealed for The Trench, but rumors suggest it will release prior to Aquaman 2, which has a release date of December 16, 2022.
